Cold Recycling (CR) techniques are powerful strategies to rehabilitate pavements. When properly applied, it has long term economic benefits—allowing owner agencies to stretch their available funds while providing the traveling public with a safe and reliable driving surface.

Why Cold Recycle?

Safer than traditional methods

Proven technology with a range of strategies to suit most rehabilitation challenges

More sustainable if designed and constructed correctly

Uses all existing, paid for materials

Requires limited new materials

Minimizes trucking operations

Shorter construction time, less traffic disruption

Cost effective / lower life-cycle cost

Removes distresses instead of covering them

Selected strategies enhance structural capacity

Extended pavement life

Recycled roads can be recycled againSpecifications / nSSPs are already in place

Experienced contractors are already working in California

Pavement Preservation & Recycling Alliance

RoadResource.org was built by more than 60 industry leaders and volunteers from across theUS and Canada, and is funded by resources from the Pavement Preservation and Recycling Alliance (PPRA) which is an alliance of three sister associations:

Asphalt Emulsion Manufacturers Association (AEMA), the International Slurry Surfacing Association (ISSA) and the Asphalt Recycling and Reclamation Association (ARRA).

Asphalt Recycling & Reclaiming Association

Is a national network of asphalt recycling professionals dedicated to helping agencies achieve the maximum engineering, economic, and environmental benefit by reusing the greatest resource they already have – their existing asphalt pavement.

Their members perform work with integrity – acting in constant pursuit of innovation and sound engineering to ensure agencies experience the highest quality end result.

They achieve this through:

  • Setting technical specs, standards and best practices to ensure quality and treatment - success.

  • Offering technical support and a place to go for answers.

  • Sharing innovation and insight into latest trends

  • Accelerating the growth and success of asphalt recycling

Through cold planning, reclamation, recycling, and stabilization they’re members save money, time, and precious natural resources, empowering agencies to make their roads and taxpayer dollars go further.

Loudon International

Loudon International is an independent consulting engineering firm registered in the Republic of South Africa. The firm (formerly AA Loudon Partners) actively participates in pavement rehabilitation projects, worldwide, specializing in pavement design and the application of recycling and bitumen stabilization technology.

The firm achieves this through engagement with industry organizations, client bodies, consulting engineers and contractors to promote and utilize recycling as the preferred approach to rehabilitating distressed pavements.  Assistance is provided in assessing specific projects, designing a recycling solution and in the construction activities where material is recycled from existing pavements. This is essentially a “technology transfer” service whereby local engineers work with and learn from the Loudon International specialists assigned to the project, allowing them to become acquainted with the technology so that they can continue unassisted with future work.

Since 1996, Loudon International has been actively involved in pavement rehabilitation projects on all continents (except Antarctica) allowing their engineers to amass a wealth of experience.  The map below indicates the extent of their exposure to projects that fall under almost all environmental conditions that can be encountered.
